The River Foss Society is a volunteer-led organisation dedicated to protecting and enhancing the River Foss and its surrounding environment for the benefit of wildlife, local communities and future generations.
We bring together people who care about the river, working with residents, community groups and partner organisations to improve understanding, encourage positive action and create more opportunities for everyone to enjoy the River Foss.
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to help create a healthy, thriving River Foss that supports wildlife, enriches local communities and remains a valued part of York’s natural heritage for generations to come.
Protect & improve
We support practical action that helps protect water quality, restore natural habitats and reduce the pressures affecting the river and its wildlife.
Understand & monitor
Our volunteers collect information about the river’s chemistry, biology and biodiversity, helping to build a clearer picture of its health over time.
Connect and inspire
We bring people together through volunteering, events, talks and educational activities that encourage greater understanding and care for the River Foss.
What We Do

Our Story
The River Foss Society was formed by local people with a shared interest in the river and its future. Since then, it has grown into an active community of volunteers, members and supporters working together to protect and celebrate this important part of York’s landscape.
Today, the Society continues to build on that legacy, combining practical action, environmental monitoring and community involvement to help create a healthier and more resilient river.
