WHO WE ARE

Our History

Discover how a shared interest in the River Foss grew into more than fifty years of conservation, community involvement and enjoyment of the river.

More Than Fifty Years of Caring for the Foss

The River Foss Society began in 1973 as the River Foss Amenity Society. It was founded by York printer, publisher, naturalist and philanthropist William Kaye “Bill” Sessions, whose childhood beside the river inspired a lifelong interest in its wildlife and natural environment.

The Society was established to improve access to the river, protect its habitats and create more opportunities for local people to enjoy it. Although its activities have developed over the years, these founding principles continue to guide its work today.

The Foss Walk

One of the Society’s earliest and most significant achievements was supporting the creation of a connected walking route following the River Foss from York towards its source at Pond Head in the Howardian Hills.

The Walk officially opened on 12 July 1975 with an inaugural stroll attended by approximately 100 people. The route later developed into the Foss Walk, covering around 28.5 miles and traditionally completed over two days.

To allow people to discover and enjoy the river, the  Society monitors the condition of the various footpaths and sineage, and raise concerns where access has been damaged or lost.

Resilience and Renewal

The Society experienced a difficult period during the 1990s as longstanding members retired and fewer volunteers were available to serve on the committee. At one point, its continued operation was uncertain.

Dedicated committee members kept the Society active, and a community recruitment campaign later attracted new volunteers and increased membership. During the 2000s, the committee was revitalised and the Society adopted its first formal constitution in 2008.

The Society’s historical records are preserved within the River Foss Society Archive at York Explore, providing an important resource for anyone wishing to learn more about its work.

Caring for the River

Throughout its history, the Society has supported practical activities including litter picking, habitat work, tree planting, footpath monitoring and raising awareness of invasive species.

It has also organised talks, walks, exhibitions and community events, monitored developments affecting the river and encouraged improvements to riverside habitats.

The Society’s newsletter has recorded these activities for decades. The earliest surviving issue dates from 1977, and newsletters from February 1989 onwards are held within the York Explore archive.
